Happy 2012!

Registrations are open for five online subtitling courses (taught in Portuguese) for the first months of the year.

No matter where you are, you can simply access the web to join the live, interactive virtual classrooms, with classes given through audio conference to small groups. The Aulavox platform (for Windows) offers several payment options and issues a certification after each course.

• Film Subtitling, basic level - 5 one-hour lectures, with exercises corrected individually. Introduction to subtitling techniques focused on translation for DVD, without specialized software. From English to Portuguese – February/March 2012, on Tuesdays. From Spanish to Portuguese – April 2012, on Wednesdays.
• Film Subtitling, advanced level - 5 one-hour lectures, with exercises corrected individually. Advanced subtitling techniques focused on translation for DVD and TV, using the subtitling software Subtitle Workshop (v. 2.51). From English to Portuguese – May 2012, on Tuesdays. From Spanish to Portuguese – May 2012, on Wednesdays.
• Horse subtitling software workshop - 3 lectures (two 2h and one 1h long) for translators with experience in subtitling. Training with the subtitling software Horse (v. 3.2). Language-independent. March 2012, Monday and Wednesday.

A new edition of Film Subtitling Course (English-Portuguese, taught in Portuguese), in its new, intensive format, was scheduled. This will be the eighth group of subtitling specialists trained at PUC-Rio since 2007.

Classes will be held from July 10th (Tuesday) to July 18th (Wednesday), 2012 at PUC Rio de Janeiro. There will be with six hours of classes for seven days – 42 hours in total – in a computer lab with one computer per student. The course will be taught by Carolina Alfaro de Carvalho.

From November 2011, the basic and advanced levels of the film subtitling course for Italian-to-Portuguese translators will be taught as a customized course via Skype. Although the content, hours, method, and exercises remain the same, this new mode is much more flexible, allowing translators to schedule the date and time directly with the instructor and also do the exercises at their own pace.

Our partners Carolina Alfaro de Carvalho and Bianca Bold made a presentation at the 52nd Annual Conference of the  American Translators Association (ATA), which took place in Boston, MA, from October 25 to 29, 2011. It was entitled Introduction to Subtitling Techniques and Strategies for English<>Portuguese Translators.

This is the abstract:

Starting with an overview of audiovisual translation, an area in which subtitling is one of many options, we will discuss various aspects of translation for subtitling. Its purposes, public, common procedures, involved media, and unique structural features will be addressed. Our tips on syntactic and stylistic elements will help translators convey a succinct, efficient message on the screen despite the inherent space and time constraints. Through the English<>Portuguese translation of short video clips, the participants will have the chance to apply the new techniques. The group will then discuss the possible outcomes of the hands-on exercise.

Our partner Bianca Bold has launched a blog, written in English, to help those who buy translation services to obtain the best results. She shares important information through a much needed perspective, focusing on translation clients. For translators, especially beginners, the contents are also very useful, as they convey the best practices in translation. The Film Subtitling Course, taught by Carolina Alfaro de Carvalho at PUC Rio de Janeiro in July 2011, was a success . The class was full, and clients rushed to select the new subtitling specialists. This course will be held again in January and July 2012 (see more recent news).

Carolina Alfaro de Carvalho was one of the speakers at the panel on subtitling that took place in the Third International Translation and Interpretation Conference organized by the Brazilian Association of Translators and Interpreters. She talked about the market of technical and institutional videos, while Bruno Murtinho (4 Estações) and Nick Magrath (Gemini Media) approached other relevant issues related to the translation and subtitling industry.

The second edition of our course on Translation for Film Subtitling: Theory, Technique and Practice for translators from English and Spanish to Portuguese, with 36 hours of training in a computer lab, took place in São Paulo, Brazil, in March.

Other on-site training courses have not been scheduled for São Paulo, but registrations are open for online courses and intensive courses in Rio de Janeiro (see more recent news).
